#2 of 55 blogs i have to write...

the person i most admire... there are so many people in my life who i admire for a myriad of reasons, but this particular person is quite near and dear to my heart.

the american soldier
*for: my family, my husband, and military friends; thanks for it all*

i have laughed and cried, been exhausted, mustered-up courage out of nowhere, fought alongside, been a first responder when they were hurt, been a friend, a comrade, loved, lost, and have been the american soldier. i've thrown a few back, made sure they got home, spent countless hours on a roof watching tracers, explored saddam's palaces, sweat until i was dry & then sweat some more, watched as they were promoted, and demoted, and sometimes promoted again. i've seen them at their best, worst, toughest, weakest, and when they are homesick. i've been there when they were sick as a dog, hopped up on 'rip its' and what we all look like after 16+ hour days for months on the streets of iraq. they play pranks, acquire equipment "magically", and hit the imaginary wall that makes you feel as if there's nothing left in you. i know what they look like when they can't sleep for days on end, after walking to fill the lack of the sleep and they need comfort you don't know how to give. they spend days, months, years away from family for a measly paycheck and sometimes not even a "thank-you" when they get home.

there is no specific "type" when you ask who the american soldier is- they are from all walks of life, and generally an unassuming bunch; chances are you know a few and just don't realize it. they are from the northeast, midwest, cali and the south. from cities and the 'burbs and the farms that feed us. high school grads, doctors, lawyers, computer 'geeks', and beauty queens.

as much as they are different, there is one tie that binds, and ultimately sets them apart from the 'civilians'~ they stepped up and took an oath to protect & defend the constitution of the united states of america against all enemies; foreign and domestic~ so you and your fellow americans can speak your mind, raise your children, enjoy your country, and sleep peaceably at night.

you don't have to go out and find a soldier to thank them, or put a yellow ribbon on the tree in your front yard to show your support, just take a moment to think about the soldiers who have lived in america and loved their country so much they chose to fight for you, and especially those who gave their lives for YOU.

here goes nothin' #1

so, first on the list of blogs i HAVE to write is The Story of My Most Serious Injury... which is going to be pretty difficult for me. i've thought and thought and thought some more about this one, and i really can't come up with anything too significant (or at least not worthy of a blog...) so, i guess i'll have to settle for something a tad boring, and then share my sister's most serious injury because, well, i have to admit, it was all my fault! i'd have to say mine would have to be when i got a spring stuck in my finger~ yep, that's right, a spring! i can't remember exactly how old i was, but i do know we were living in the great state of alaska at the time. for the super long days of summer there, the parentals got us a trampoline. the whole family, and the next-door neighbors were all putting it together~ i apparently wasn't paying enough attention to what i was doing and the spring i was attaching slipped. it got completely stuck in my right index finger! so gross, and because of my age, i was horrified & did my best impression of johnny drama *emphasis on DRAMA* from entourage~ and a tad too well i might add! the rest of the evening turned into a fun-filled trip to the emergency room complete with a tetanus shot. boo.

now for a real serious injury story! *although, when it happened, i feared for my life and thought i had broken my little sister for good*

we were seven and four, or close to it and living in germany... we were playing in the bathtub and decided it wasn't fun anymore... i got out of the tub, dripping water all over the already-slick tile floor all-the-while thinking it would be brilliantly fun for my little sister to stand on the edge of the tub and climb onto my back so i could carry her to our room down the hall... all was going according to my plan until the next thing i know we are falling fast and in a split second my sister is screaming bloody murder. ( rightfully so since she was gushing from her right eyebrow!) mom comes running to see what we are yelling about and find my sister; still bleeding... but at this point she's asking to look at her head in the mirror rather than freaking out anymore! she has always been quite a trooper when it comes to anything involving pain, even getting dental work with no drugs! what a nut... so anywho, i learned my lesson about slippery floors, and my sister has had a lovely scar to carry around on her face her whole life, all in the name of sisterly fun... we can laugh about it now, especially because you can see where she hit the corner of the tiles exactly, but it wasn't very funny back then! stay tuned for blog #2... the person i most admire... should be a fun one!!

lists, lists, and more lists

so i was surfin' the web, as i love to do... and came across a blog entitled: '100 blog topics i hope YOU write' and thought it was an interesting idea. this particular blog was a little too social-media-minded for me, so i did some more searching. sure enough, i found another list which was based on Chris Brogan's original article. i've challenged myself to write the blogs listed; there are 55 of them to be exact. i think the reason this list 'spoke' to me is because they are mostly topics i'd likely never write about on my own. so, i'm on my way to writing #1.... The Story of My Most Serious Injury... Join me, if you dare! *if you decide to join me, i'd really appreciate a link back to my page* stay tuned for the blog!!
