Saturday Snapsot

Good morning lovelies! I'm going to use this snapshot post to share the block I made for 'Quilts for Boston'. a life vest and a whole lot of love

The week started off great for me, my husband was back from the states and we had plans to spend every second we could together. As I said goodbye at the door of our flat, he headed to work and I completed my morning routine of making coffee and lounging in front of my computer to read bloglovin'. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping away in true spring fashion and I was planning my assault on the day. Coffee downed: check. Blogs all read: check. To-do list for the day: check. Off I went through my day. I tried to check off my to-do list as fast as I could so I could watch the Boston Marathon.

If you know me in real life, you know I am a runner. I enjoy running (I know, I'm a little crazy!) and I enjoy watching my favorite athletes run. Two of my running idols, if you will, are Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher and they were competing on Monday. I was really excited to see how they'd do and couldn't wait to watch them battle it out through the marathon.

Little did I know what the Boston Marathon would bring- not all excitement and cheers, but watching that day also brought horror and pain. The scenes of the bombings looked like scenes from Iraq- not downtown Boston on a spring day. My heart ached as I watched the footage and my heart continues to ache for the aftermath and continued terror Boston is dealing with today. There aren't enough words in the world to speak what's in my heart and show how heavy this has been weighing on my mind. I am thinking of the families that have lost loved ones, families who are learning to live with a new reality of being maimed in a terror attack, people trying to answer the question of 'why?' My heart is heavy because I have through an attack, I've seen the horror, I've lost friends, and I know the road to recovery is long. They will never be the same. They will never forget.

Words often don't do emotions justice and my thoughts were disorganized and jumbled in my mind, so I did what I do best when I need to think clearly. I ran. I ran quietly through my town, up and down the hills, over the wooden bridge that makes my steps seem so loud, up the path past the farmers fields ripe with fresh manure and out through the tall grass of the river side. My steps were deliberate and shorter than normal, but I felt I moved with a purpose, to make sense of the events of late. I padded down the path and eventually made it back to my flat, home sweet home, where I felt so safe. I quickly noted I should work on not taking that for granted in the future.

I found myself in my sewing room itching to give my emotions an outlet. I don't often allow myself to create in the heat of emotion because it can be a little scary to let yourself go, not knowing what the end will produce. I felt much more calm after my run, so I let my heart guide me through the process of making. It felt good and was a much needed release of anxious energy.

I came up with a tribute mini quilt (it's about 12.5X12.5) for Boston I named 'to boston with love' and thought I'd share it with you.

to boston with love

detail on mini quilt

There are a million things I'd like to say about the events that have taken place thus far, but I'll save them for another post. How do you deal with tragedies like these? What's your go-to home 'therapy'? I'd love for you to join me in crafting something for Boston- it can be any medium... crayon, paper, fabric, whatever floats your boat.... Check out the Flickr Group I've created here: craft4boston Feel free to join and link what you've created!

I came across this Ted talk today via a friend on Facebook that made me smile, and dare I confess, cry a little. There is no question it has been a trying week for America, and I can guarantee each and every one of you could probably use a smile right now... and likely a hug to go along with it! Obviously I can't give all of you a hug, but I hope this will feel a little like a hug!

the world delayed me...

i know its been a while since i've blogged, and it is not because i haven't wanted to... i've just been in a funk i cant seem to shake... and now this morning i felt great, until i flipped my head over to dry my hair after my shower and then upon flipping my head back up, i felt a horrid shooting pain run the length of my back. now my upper back between my shoulder blades and into my lower neck are in excruciating pain. as i type this i look quite like the hunchback of notre dame, except i'm also sitting a bit sideways. i am not enjoying this, although my mood is super happy today for some reason (i'm NOT complaining!) so, in light of happiness billowing out of my soul, i wanted to share a fun little post i have adapted from a project called a week in the life i saw recently on alie edwards' fabulous site! what would yours say?! '

i am thinking
I need to work on bring happier, and how much I am dying to open my own etsy shop!

I am thankful
for my amazing hubby who makes me smile, even when he’s sleeping.

I am eating
yogurt and granola… with a cup of coffee…mmmmmmm!!!

I am learning
to quilt on my mom’s sewing machine. Yes.

I am wearing
my usual- tshirt and capris with my birkenstock. i am beginning to think i need a new wardrobe…. a grown-up looking one!

I am creating
products i can sell on etsy and i’m working on finishing up a baby gift for my lovely friend, kate who is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her first baby!

I am going
to get through this pain. no matter what.

I am reading
wicked: the life and times of the wicked witch of the west

I am hoping
the roundup i just sprayed all over the weed with thorns in the garden works quickly so i can plant the fun two-tone grass i bought and my lavender!

I am hearing
cheesy soap operas on the tv i am not sure why i haven’t yet turned off from the morning news.

I am buying
nothing because we are trying to save our money!

I am tweeting
about paper n stitch – All Modern Giveaway - A daily dose of handmade, design, and style inspiration http://shar.es/mhyDj

I am blogging
                  this lovely little list to all of you- and hope you’ll make your own and send me a link! hint hint! {wink}

I am texting
my hubby as usual… he’s in a really tough class for work right now and i’m sending him little motivations all week long!

I am watching
the l word- don’t judge. it’s drama-ridden and saucy and has so much girl-power.

Outside my window
                  are my cutie little barn swallows on the back porch tending to their eggs! i can’t wait for baby birds!! {plus i find it amazingly apropos because i want a vintage-looking swallow as my next tattoo!}

Around the house
i have most of my messed cleaned up! yay!!

On my facebook page
i am following the demi & ashton foundation and learning about how ohio has become a hot bed for human traffickers. we really need to do something about this.

One of my favorite things
                        is when my hubby walks through the door after work and gives me his big huge smile and tells me he missed me. {heart melts every time!}

dream home.

when you're a kid, or a bright-eyed teenager you always dream of what your life will look like when you are all grown up.

the amazingly good-looking model perfect person you marry.

the great career that allows you plenty of spending money for vacations and nice clothes.

don't forget the big house with the white picket fence.

a fancy car.

does this sound anything like the dream you had when you were growing up? it sounds like mine. i was going to be living in the city in a fabulous loft during the week... and go to my huge house in the country on the weekends, too. HA. the thought, "how's that workin' out for you?" comes to mind.

but since i've actually grown up and am currently an adult (or try to act like one when i absolutely have to!) i find i want that childish dream less and less. i am lucky to have found my amazing other half, and wouldn't trade him for the world. we have lived in some crazy places... the farthest places from being huge and having a white picket fence. we have lived in a bombed out building on an iraqi army post, an airplane hanger on an iraqi air force base, a tiny (think single bed, wall locker, desk and about three feet of walking space) room in a shipping container, and a small apartment in japan! each place has had its ups and downs, but i honestly wouldn't change it because it has really allowed us to appreciate what we have in each other!

instead of the high-powered job in the city, i'd rather a work-from-home job and for us to live in something that is earth-friendly- with solar panels if i have it my way! that's why i immediately fell in love with tumbleweed- the tiny house company!

i would love to have a tiny house for a myriad of reasons.

less to clean.
we wouldn't have as much 'stuff'.
the sun could shine right through the whole house!
less impact on the earth.
more yard for me to plant my gardens.

could you live in a tiny house? and better yet- would you WANT to? i'm going to send this to the hubs while he's on his trip so he can see how wonderful they are!

happy tiny house love day!

music that moves me.

and this one goes out to my hubs all the way in seattle! miss you loves!

party time.

so my birthday is coming
i don't want or need anything
honest
but if i had an endless budget...
these are some of the things i'd surely buy.
enjoy my online window shopping.

i'd run right over to sarah + abraham and have a field day. with this. in-touch clutch.
love.

then i'd grab a friend and go peruse at sublime stiching for a kit or two to embellish my life.
huzzah.
dressing on the side is up next on the spree. for an amazingly adorable t-shirt.
perfect.

then i'd head here for this plant stand so i can stop moving my plants around all of the time so they don't kill our grass weed yard!

i'd LITERALLY run to get this next item Vibram 5 Fingers... and then slip them on my feet ASAP! oohlala!

and then i'd ask to be sent HERE doesn't it look amazing?!

my art.

i never thought i would enjoy sewing as much as i do. i remember watching my mom when i was a kid and thought, 'that's WAY too much work' and 'how could she possibly find that FUN?!' i always thought it was great when i saw the completed projects, and loved the quilt i snuggled under that made my bed so pretty.

i have always loved to create things. i begged my dad for the 8 foot by 5 foot cork board that was in one of his offices and turned it into the biggest collage of my life. it was so much fun to put little bits and pieces of my life on that board over the years... it was full of scraps of paper, tiny pieces of fabric, pins and buttons... and i could tell you the story of every piece. i would also always steal the little scraps leftover from my mom's quilts and make crazy projects of my own... i made little bags, covers for my books... and the first clothing item i made was a little hippie tank top made especially for my 4th dave matthews band concert. (yes, i love him THAT much! ha)

after i got married last year we went to hawaii to visit family and do our "mock-honeymoon". while there, i thought it would be a good challenge for me to make a quilt. a big quilt. one that you have to follow directions to make. (i'm notorious for changing patterns to make them my own, or because i hate to follow directions...) i completed my challenge. i was pretty proud of myself... and when my husband was shocked and delighted, it make it all that much more special.

since then, i've made two more quilts.... and thought i'd share the latest with you; plus a little piece of art i just made this afternoon for our bedroom. enjoy!

a play on gray.

so, i thought it would be a few years down the road when i "penned" this story, but, alas, here i am. i'll try to set the scene first, and let the horror, disbelief, and sheer panic set in a little later.

last week i had a phone interview for a potential job. during this interview i was informed there would be about four steps to the hiring process, but wasn't told exactly what these would be. i agreed i was OK with this, and at the end of the interview i was told the next step would be an analytical test. this test would last approximately 45 minutes to an hour, and was deemed 'DIFFICULT'... oh gee, thanks, sign me right up. grr.

i had until sunday to complete this task, and on saturday i finally got around to it. the first part was about 35 minutes of reading multiple paragraphs and answering questions... think SATs... ick. then came the middle section which were two questions a piece of "what best describes you". this went on and on and on and i never thought i'd get done. the one response i got which i'd like you to focus on is 'i don't easily get stressed'.... just keep that in mind.

fast forward about an hour. i am getting ready for bed; conducting my usual routine of brushing teeth, washing my face, and then dousing my skin with nighttime moisturizer. as i'm doing this i look into the mirror and spot what i believe to be a rogue gray hair. it's ok, i think, and reach for my fancy pink tweezers,  and go in for the kill.

ENTER THE HORROR. "OMG" i yell loud enough that the hubs hears me... he's laying in bed playing scrabble on the iphone.... "what happened?" i hear... the response that courses through my mind is ,"what happened is that i am OLD, how did this happen?!" but i say.... "i have a HUGE streak of gray hairs... where do they COME from?!" in his usual fashion my hubs is sweet as pie and calmly, matter-of-factly states, "you are still beautiful, no matter what color your hair is." my horrified babbling causes him to come see what all of the fuss is about, and finds me with my face dangerously close the to mirror plucking hairs one at a time. there is a crazy streak that is forming in the front of my hair. the hubs reminds me, as if i wasn't aware, that "you got that from your dad!" thanks, papa, for the early grays.....

then the smartass in the hubs returns and he says, "i think we might have to go back to that test you just did and change that answer about stress to 'when stressed- she finds the culprit and plucks with vengeance'" i couldn't help but laugh and that point, but i'm still not happy with this new-found gray situation. but i would like to request i go gray like stacy london... cause hers is just sexy.

i did happen to come across an article recently though that might make my going gray a little easier... you can read it here. i really hate the idea of coloring my hair, and am not looking forward to doing it on a regular basis, but it might be coming to that. ugh. grr. eek! aah!

4.15.2010

so, i need a lift...

a facelift that is. no, not ME, silly... my blog! but i'm having some serious issues finding a muse of some sort to get me going. i've been searching and searching to no avail. boo.

if anyone has a suggestion of a color palette, a theme, a pic, ANYTHING i'd be interested!!! i feel like i'm playing hide and seek with a spritely muse...

"MUSE, OH MUSE, WHERE ARE YOU?!?!?!?!"

happy musings.

musical madness.

it's turning out to be a musical kind of day. likely because i'm trying to chill the nerves before my 12:30 CST phone interview for the job i'd LOVE to have. music always knows just how to calm my nerves. that and the adorable text messages i keep getting from my sweeter-than-sugar hubs about how i'm bound to get the job because i'm so amazing. i love that man! he makes me smiley and happy and my soul yells, "huzzah!" every time i think about him! yay.

so, miss elsie flannigan over at a beautiful mess posted a cute little plug for her uber-talented boyfriend who has just headed out on tour, so i clicked the link and fell instantly in love with his voice! i wanted to share the love and give a little shout-out to jeremy larson for helping me out with my anxiety this morning (unbeknownst to him, of course. ha!) but anywho, you should check it out, listen for a sec, and fall. hard. go.

happy music day!

ps... here's a little taste...

how neat is that video... the little girl and her mom got me... will you be there? we could have a virtually wonderful coffee date! yay!

happy coffee sipping!

in search of a "box of love"

i know- the grocery store doesn't exactly evoke the fondest of memories, or squeals of delight, but bear with me and my grocery store story! i called the hubs on my way out the door to see if he could think of any 'must-haves' from the grocery store... he thought of most of the usuals that we have to have in the house: yogurt, milk, special k, granola, and fresh veggies... but then he gave me an added little challenge: he needed a "box of love". if you know me at all, i'm always up for a challenge and i love giving people gifts (it's actually one of my weaknesses, i'd rather buy something for someone else than something i really need. *like new jeans right now, my least fav item to shop for!*) so, i zipped out of the driveway to hit the heb supermarket which is luckily right down the street!

i usually attempt to stay on the most outside aisles of the grocery store (ie: produce, dairy products, meats) because then i don't see all of the yummy carb and sugar-laden boxes of tastiness, albeit un-healthiness of center aisles. i don't always make it through without hitting the center, but hey, i try not to... but this day in particular, i went straight for the junk food middle in search of a "box of love".

there wasn't any certain item i was looking for, but i knew the right thing would just jump up and down on the shelf screaming, "pick me, pick me!!!!" sure enough. there was a white box full of kashi dark chocolate coconut bars jumping on the shelf. the perfect mix of chocolate, coconut and granola- YUM-O! i quickly grabbed the box and tossed it in the cart, and i tried to get out of the aisle... EXCEPT... there was one other thing acting crazy on its shelf and i just couldn't pass it up. a newly made bag of sun chips- a newly made bag that was COMPLETELY BIODEGRADABLE! holy jumping food items in the grocery store. what a genius idea! i couldn't leave them in the store. so, in the basket they went.

you can read more about the bio-bag (as i'm affectionately calling it) HERE. they even have a neat little video you can check out!

if you'd like more info on kashi... you can go to THIS SITE. when you see the green 'support squad' pic on the front, click on the link to get a free sample! i know you love free stuff, and i haven't met anyone yet who doesn't love kashi! i know i'm a HUGE fan!

thought i'd share the finished product "box of love" with you...

what are some of your favorite 'love gifts'? or do you just love gifts?

happy love gifting! *especially green gifting!*

the cove

the hubby and decided we needed to check out the movie the cove - especially because we lived in japan for a while- and because its good to get educated on what's going on in your world. we sat down on our lazy sunday afternoon to see what the hype was about and found ourselves horrified by the complete lack of concern for others the japanese fishers and government "cover-up" artists had.

i also learned the iwc (international whaling commission) is a HUGE joke. most of the people who were the reps for their respective countries had no clue about whales in the first place and most of them were falling asleep during the meeting. this of course begs my question: how are these people in charge of anything? how can we send these people to represent our countries on a global scale and think they make us look good? disgusting.

the most interesting part of this documentary for me was that the man spearheading this fight to protect the dolphins is flipper's trainer himself. after spending so much time with flipper (actually named kathy) realized that captivity is not a good life for these animals.

if you have some time, i would recommend anyone checking out this movie. i was glad i took the time to watch! also check out: www.takepart.com

social media for good

found at mashable.com:

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore have just launched a social and global campaign to raise awareness about child slavery in Haiti with the goal to completely ban the “restavec” system that is promoting it.
In an exclusive interview with Mashable, the couple explained to us exactly what is happening in the earthquake-devastated country, what they hope to accomplish through their foundation, and how people can use social media to spread the word.
Here is what they had to say, as well as ways you can help.

Background: Restavec and What’s Happening in Haiti

Slavery is something that most people believe is a thing of the past. After all, it was abolished in the U.S. nearly 150 years ago by the Emancipation Proclamation and Abraham Lincoln. However, Ashton and Demi told us otherwise in a 20 minute phone call interview conducted earlier today.
In Haiti, there is a system known as restavec, which is French for “one who stays with.” In it, a child is sent by his or her parents to work as a domestic servant with a host family, usually because the parents believe that their child will have a better quality of life if they give him or her up.
Both Ashton and Demi strongly believe that the system is simply slavery given a different name. They are forced to help out a host family, clean after them, and essentially work as slaves. Ashton said that most of these children, who can be anywhere from five to fifteen, do not go to school and are not provided the opportunities they deserve.

The Campaign Against Restavec

On Wednesday, March 31st, there will be a meeting of donors at the United Nations to discuss sending $11 billion in aid that the Haitian government has request. Out of that, $2.8 billionwould be reconstruction funds from the U.S. Government, requested by President Obama.. Thus, several U.S. congressmen will be attending the conference.
This is where the Demi & Ashton Foundation (DNA) is looking to make the biggest impact. Their feeling is that in order to build a newer and better Haiti, we cannot put money into a broken system that includes restavec. Demi stated that just as builders will apply stricter codes to protect buildings from future earthquakes, they want to apply rules that will ban the restavec system. This, they believe, is “the first steps to a better and more just society.”
They made it clear that they totally support governments, foundations and individuals that are donating their time and money to Haiti. However, the reality is that the suffering that exists there is horrific and it will take many years to rebuild; thus, it is important to rebuild it right.
Starting now, their foundation is launching a campaign to bring awareness to the restavec issue to those with their fingers on the purse strings. They want to build incredible awareness and generate incredible discussion around this important issue, starting with the social web.

The Role of Social Media in the Campaign

The key to their campaign to end child slavery — and slavery worldwide — is awareness. The problem is simple: most people think slavery doesn’t exist. Ashton specifically pulled out one stat: there are now twiceas many salves than there were when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a problem that has only grown with time, and the celebrity couple do not want to live in a world where this atrocity exists.
“It’s going to take a lot of loud voices,” Ashton said to me. This is why he and Demi are turning to the social web to spread the message. Platforms like Mashable, Facebook, and Twitter have helped the world come around on important issues before — three key examples Ashton gave was fighting Malaria, the #IranElection Crisis, and #BlameDrewsCancer. They believe that ending child slavery in Haiti will become another cause the social web will rally around.

One of the key themes of our conversation was that this is not an impossible problem to solve. Unlike curing a disease, which can really depend on the type of disease and the state of scientific problem, slavery is dependent purely on human behavior. Thus, the solution to the problem is based on “love thy neighbor as yourself.” Ending child slavery and restovec is not an unattainable goal.
Their call to action is simple: tell people about what’s happening in Haiti, and reach out to the congressmen that have the power to get Haiti’s government to end child slavery. Demi and Ashton are encouraging everybody to use Twitter to @reply to the congressmen that will be attending next week’s UN meeting (they will soon post a list of them on their Facebook page, their Twitter account, and their foundation’s website). They encourage everyone to tweet and contact Barack Obama about the issue. They hope, most of all, to generate buzz and start a big conversation around restovec and bring a new level of awareness that was not there before.
The campaign begins now, and goes on even after the donor’s conference at the UN next Wednesday — Demi says that it will take a long-term commitment by everyone to end child slavery not only in Haiti, but worldwide as well.
I believe these two quotes from our phone call really sum up their passion for banning child slavery and the restovec system in Haiti:
Ashton: “Let’s support the Haitian people, but let’s support them the right way, and let’s support all of them; don’t forget about the 300,000 children that are enslaved.”
Demi: “It’s about creating the awareness that draws the line of what’s acceptable and unacceptable. Any human being enslaved is unacceptable. As long as one is enslaved, then we are all enslaved. It’s an atrocity to stand by and let this happen.”
